The death of a student in a building at Southeastern Louisiana University in Hammond prompted an emergency alert and led to the closure of the building.

The university did not release any details about the student’s death. A university spokesperson was not immediately available for comment Thursday.

However, SLU posted a statement of the death on its social media platforms Wednesday and alerted students and others in the university community to the availability of counseling.

“We are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of one of our students. Our thoughts, prayers and deepest condolences are with his family and friends at this difficult time. We ask for respect for the privacy of the family and friends of this student,” the university’s statement reads.

“As a valued member of the Southeastern family, we know the loss is being felt by many and we are doing everything we can to support friends, family and the wider student and staff community.”

The statement said anyone who wanted to speak to counselors should call (985) 549-3894 or visit the school’s counseling center on campus.

News media reports said the university issued an alert about an “active incident” in the school's biology building in the early afternoon Wednesday. In a later message to the university community, the school said the building would remain closed for the remainder of Wednesday.
