UPDATE: Newman's Randy Livingston can return to coaching after judge's ruling.
Suspended Newman boys basketball coach Randy Livingston is suing the LHSAA in hopes to returning to the bench this season.
The Louisiana High School Athletics Association suspended Livingston for a year, for allegedly violating rules on player recruiting, but Livingston says he was denied due process, specifically a hearing on the allegations before a decision was made to suspend him.
The one-year suspension is due to run through Dec. 14, according to an LHSAA document provided with the lawsuit, filed Thursday in Orleans Parish Civil District Court.
The LHSAA also ordered Newman to forfeit three seasons worth of basketball wins and barred the team from participating in the state playoffs, leaving the Uptown New Orleans private school ineligible for a chance at winning third consecutive state title. Newman reached the state finals in 2021 and won the 2022 and 2023 two state championships in the Division III select bracket.
Court records show a hearing on Livingston's suit is scheduled Jan. 18. If he wins, he could return to coaching the Greenies.
Livingston played on three state championship basketball teams as a Newman student in the early 1990s. He returned to the school as a coach and teacher in 2018 and became the head varsity coach in 2019.
