NOTE: The Causeway has reopened in both directions, officials said at 5:53 p.m. Monday.
The Lake Pontchartrain Causeway is closed, authorities said at 5:12 p.m. Monday.
The bridge was closed in both directions due to high winds and thunderstorms.
There were also reports of hail in the Mandeville area Monday evening.
Bridge general manager Carlton Dufrechou said there were wind gusts of 60 mph.
The bridge closure comes as waves of severe storms are passing over the metro area. The rush hour closure left some northshore motorists to either face a wait for when it would reopen or a longer trip on Interstate 10 across the twin span bridges.
