Photos: Young builders dream big at Block Kids competition in Slidell
The Northshore, Louisiana Chapter 339 of the National Association of Women in Construction held its annual Block Kids competition on Saturday, Nov. 18, 2023, at the Boys and Girls Club in Slidell. Twenty-one children built buildings and other objects using Lego-style blocks, foil and string during the competition, designed to spur a child’s interests in engineering, construction and related trades. The top three winners, who won trophies and cash prizes, will advance to regional and national competitions. Shiane Williams, 11, won first place; Peyton Black, 12, second; and Owen Switzer, 7, third. Trey Brownfield, a Slidell council member; Troy Brackett, a retired safety office for the Louisiana National Guard; and Marie McKinney, a retired board member of the Slidell Boys and Girls Club, judged the competition.
