Sometimes you need a last-minute gift, and who wants to make yet another shopping trip?

I suggest this easy sauce that can be presented in a pretty jar as something to whip up for just this occasion.

It is a cheater’s version of a Dulce de Leche, but it's a tried and true method used all over Mexico.

Quick Dulce de Leche Sauce

Makes 12 ounces.

1 12-ounce can sweetened condensed milk

1. Place the can of condensed milk in a pan or in a crock pot. Do not open the can. Add enough water to completely cover the can with water by at least 2 inches.

2. On the stove allow the pot to come to a simmer and allow it to simmer for at least two hours and no more than three hours. In a crock pot, set the thermostat on low, cover the crock pot and set a timer for 3 hours.

3. If you are using the stove method, keep checking the pot to make sure that the water does not evaporate, thus exposing the can. The can must stay under water.

4. After the requisite time has passed, allow the can to cool in the pot with the water, but away from the heat. When the can is cool enough to handle comfortably, use a can opener to open it. It can shoot out of the initial cut in the lid if it is too hot. Be careful and don’t leave out the cooling step.

5. Pour the caramel-colored sauce into a pretty jar and it is ready to present. If you have your own labels, you can use them.
