At a recent gala at the New Orleans Jazz Market, the Norman C. Francis Leadership Institute honored outstanding alumni of Xavier University and other leaders in the community.
The NCFLI Benefit Concert & Awards Show Gala was held Nov. 16.
Alumni Sharonda Williams, Amy Boyle Collins, Todd McDonald and Jason Williams were honored with awards.
The NCFLI Icon Award went to Gayle Benson, Bill Goldring and Justice Bernette Johnson.
“The legacy of Dr. Francis is rooted in courageous, thoughtful leadership,” said Tim Francis, NCFLI’s vice chair of the board of directors, in a statement. “It’s an honor to recognize four of the Institute’s fellows who have been inspired by Dr. Francis to forge leadership paths of their own, as well as three extraordinary community leaders who have truly changed the face of New Orleans for hundreds of thousands of people.”
CCH Pounder, the actress, cultural advocate and former cast member of "NCIS: New Orleans," served as emcee. Music was provided by the New Orleans Jazz Orchestra.
The Norman C. Francis Leadership Institute was founded in 2012 with the mission of preparing professional men and women as leaders in civic engagement and social responsibility. It is named for the legendary, longtime president of Xavier, who served as the university's president from 1968-2015.
The nonpartisan NCFLI analyzes and synthesizes research findings to develop breakthrough strategies that address social and economic policies affecting African Americans as well as the nation and global markets.
“We are proud to have established the Institute. The gala was a chance to come together and celebrate the legacy of Dr. Francis and what we have created,” interim executive director Ron Carrere said in the statement.
The gala, which was the second annual event, was sponsored by Liberty Bank, LCMC Health, Entergy, Xavier University, Raymond James, Chapter V, DePaul Community Health Centers, Friend and Company and Sher Garner Law Firm.
