LSU running back Logan Diggs (3) stands on the field before the game against Texas A&M on Saturday, November 25, 2023 at Tiger Stadium in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

After transferring to LSU last spring, junior running back Logan Diggs entered the transfer portal for the second time in his career Friday, according to multiple reports.

Diggs, a Boutte native, transferred from Notre Dame after flirting with the idea of coming back to Louisiana multiple times earlier in his career. He turned into LSU’s top running back, starting eight games. Diggs finished the season with 653 yards rushing and seven touchdowns on 119 carries, the most on the team behind dual-threat quarterback Jayden Daniels.

As a junior, Diggs could have returned to school or declared early for the NFL draft. He instead decided to transfer, and now he will look for his third team. For now, players can transfer twice and play immediately next season as long as they enter the portal during the current window, which closes Saturday for LSU's players.

Without Diggs, LSU’s running back room next year would currently consist of senior Josh Williams — who said he will “most likely” return for a sixth season— promising freshman Kaleb Jackson, freshman Trey Holly and incoming four-star recruit Caden Durham. Fifth-year senior Noah Cain may also have another year of eligibility.

Diggs missed the season opener as he recovered from a hamstring injury, then started the next eight games, balancing LSU’s offense with five games of at least 97 yards rushing. Diggs missed two weeks in November with what LSU coach Brian Kelly called an upper body injury. He returned for the regular-season finale against Texas A&M.

Diggs played again a month later in the ReliaQuest Bowl. He had one carry on LSU’s opening drive and entered the injury tent. Diggs left the field with a large brace on his left leg. The nature and severity of the injury are unknown.

During his career, Diggs has rushed for 1,703 yards and 14 touchdowns. He averaged at least 5 yards per carry each of the last two seasons and also contributed in the passing game.

Diggs was a three-star recruit in the 2021 class, according to the 247Sports Composite. He attended Archbishop Rummel in Metairie and was the No. 16 recruit in the state before signing with Notre Dame.

He rushed for 230 yards as a freshman with the Fighting Irish before posting a career-high 822 rushing yards in 12 games as a sophomore in 2022. He also posted 10 catches for 211 yards that season before transferring to LSU.

Diggs was the 14th LSU player to enter the transfer portal. The Tigers lost five-star freshman offensive tackle Zalance Heard and freshman wide receiver Jalen Brown, who had been a top 100 recruit. There were losses like that, but none of them had affected the season as much as Diggs.
