The St. John Fools of Misrule started Carnival 2024 in style on Jan. 6, with a procession through the streets of downtown Covington. It was the 13th year the Fools made mischief on Kings Day, which is the first day of Carnival.
The festivities began with a members-only "Feast of Fools" at 4 p.m. at the Seiler Bar of the Columbia Street Tap Room. Then, at 6 p.m., the costumed krewe marched from the bar to the Covington Trailhead where the 2024 Lord of Fools was chosen.
Krewe members were joined by "Jewels," female members, as well as flambeaux, a brass band, a host of other costumed characters, as well as Big Chief Bo Dollis Jr. and the Wild Magnolias — New Orleans' iconic Mardi Gras Indians making a rare appearance on the northshore.
The frivolity will continue throughout the area until Feb. 13, when Fat Tuesday caps Carnival 2024, making way for the Lenten season of penance that begins on Ash Wednesday.
