Jameis Winston may have taken his last snap with the New Orleans Saints at the end of Sunday's game against the Atlanta Falcons, and it didn't come without some controversy.

Saints coach Dennis Allen and the staff had decided the offense should take a knee and let the clock run out with a little over a minute remaining and the Saints up 41-17.

Winston and the offensive line went against that decision, wanting to give running back Jamaal Williams a shot at his first touchdown of the season.

The Saints lined up in victory formation and Williams punched the ball in the end zone to cap off the 48-17 victory in the season finale.

The moment angered Falcons coach Arthur Smith, who was fired Monday after three seasons, to the point that he yelled expletives at Allen at midfield after the game.

Allen later apologized while Winston and members of the offensive line admitted that they made a "collective decision" to hand the ball off to Williams.

"That’s not who we are. That’s not how we operate," Allen said.

Allen was critical of the decision by the players, but that didn't stop them from backing Winston and the other players who played a role in the decision to give Williams the ball.

"I appreciate my teammates more than anything,” said Williams, who had a rough 2023 season. "They see what I go through, what I’ve been going through this whole year. Trying to help the team in anyway I can. I appreciate them for getting me a touchdown."

Other players offered support for Winston, who played the 2023 season on a one-year deal with New Orleans.
