Five-star quarterback Bryce Underwood has committed to LSU, he announced on social media Saturday.
Underwood is the No. 1 overall player in the nation, according to the 247Sports composite. The Tigers beat out Michigan, Alabama, Colorado, Penn State, Oregon and Florida State.
Underwood, who attends Belleville High School in Belleville, Michigan, is the first No. 1 quarterback in the nation to ever commit to LSU. He's also the first No. 1 prospect regardless of position to commit to LSU since running back Leonard Fournette in 2014.
Fournette and Underwood are the only No. 1 overall recruits to commit to LSU. Ryan Perrilloux from the Class of 2005 is the only five-star quarterback other than Underwood to commit to the Tigers.
LSU now has three five-star recruits committed to its 2025 class.
Running back Harlem Berry — the No. 1 recruit in Louisiana and No. 1 running back in the nation — made his pledge to LSU on Wednesday. And wide receiver Dakorien Moore — the No. 1 wideout in the country — has been committed to the Tigers since August.
That trio leads a strong recruiting class that also includes four-star linebacker Keylan Moses, four-star offensive tackle Brett Bordelon, four-star wide receiver TaRon Francis, four-star tight end John David LaFleur and three-star cornerback Jaylen Bell.
LSU had the No. 5 recruiting class in the nation prior to Underwood's commitment.
The Tigers enter 2024 with four quarterbacks on scholarship. Redshirt sophomore Garrett Nussmeier returns as the projected starter, and freshman Rickie Collins is on track to come back as well.
LSU also signed four-star quarterback Colin Hurley in its 2024 class and added Vanderbilt quarterback AJ Swann from the transfer portal.
In his first-ever collegiate start, Nussmeier was beyond exceptional, throwing for 395 yards and three touchdowns in LSU's 35-31 win over Wisconsin in the ReliaQuest Bowl on Monday.
Underwood's commitment continues LSU's newfound tradition of acquiring and developing elite quarterbacks after years of instability and mediocrity at the position.
Senior quarterback Jayden Daniels won the Heisman Trophy in December, marking the second time in five years an LSU quarterback had won the award. When Joe Burrow won the award in 2019, he was the first LSU quarterback to ever win it.
Daniels led the nation's No. 1 offense this past season, according to ESPN's College Football Power Index. He led the country in total yards, total touchdowns, ESPN's QBR metric, plays of 20+ yards and set the NCAA record for passer rating in a single season despite LSU failing to reach the College Football Playoff.
Burrow in 2019 threw for 5,671 yards and 60 touchdowns and guided LSU to its fourth national championship.
The recent success of Burrow and Daniels only helped LSU's pursuit of Underwood on the recruiting trail, proof that the program can develop elite quarterbacks.
But both Daniels and Burrow didn't arrive in Baton Rouge out of high school. Daniels transferred in from Arizona State and Burrow started his career at Ohio State, making Underwood's decision to choose LSU on Saturday an even more historic event.
