Balsam wreaths were laid in cemeteries, at veterans memorials and other historic sites last month as volunteers joined efforts to honor the nation's servicemen and women during the annual Wreaths Across America remembrance. The Southeast Louisiana Veterans Cemetery and other local sites were among some 4,225 locations in all 50 states, at sea and abroad that participated this year on or near Dec. 14. The wreaths were laid to remember the fallen; to honor those who serve; and to teach younger generations how to do the same. The wreaths — all replicas of a single design — are placed as a living tribute that is renewed yearly. When each is placed, the service member's name is spoken aloud and/or the military branch acknowledged.
